The Colca Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder located in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Located approximately 100 miles northwest of the city of Arequipa, the Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world, with a depth of over 10,000 feet. The region is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including many species of birds, mammals, and reptiles.
We arrived in Chivay, a small town located at the entrance to the Colca Canyon, by way of van from Arequipa. The journey took about four hours, and along the way, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains and the lush, green landscape of the Colca Valley. As we drove through the valley, we passed small villages and farms where locals were busy tending to their crops and livestock.
Upon arriving in Chivay, we headed towards our hotel, Las Casitas, a Belmond Hotel located just outside of Yanque, a small village located in the Colca Valley region. The lodge is a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of the canyon, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and canyon walls. The lodge is surrounded by lush gardens and is home to a variety of exotic plants and flowers.
As we settled into our rooms, we couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The lodge is situated at an elevation of over 8,000 feet, giving us a bird's-eye view of the canyon below. The air was crisp and clean, and we could see for miles in every direction.
After we had a chance to rest and freshen up, we set out to explore the surrounding area. One of the first things we did was visit the town of Yanque, which is home to a number of small shops, restaurants, and local markets. We browsed the stalls and stalls of fresh produce, spices, and crafts and sampled some of the delicious local cuisines.
One of the highlights of our trip to the Colca Canyon was a visit to the Mirador del Condor, a lookout point located high above the canyon. From here, we were able to watch as giant condors, the largest flying birds in the world, soared overhead, their wingspan reaching up to 10 feet. It was truly a sight to behold.
In addition to the Mirador del Condor, there are a number of other attractions and activities to enjoy in the Colca Canyon. We hiked along the canyon trails, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the deep ravine below.
As the sun began to set, we returned to our lodge and settled in for the night. The next day, we had the opportunity to visit a number of other local attractions, including the ancient Inca ruins of Sipan, the colonial-style town of Cabanaconde, and the stunning Andean villages of Maca and Madrigal.
Overall, our trip to the Colca Canyon was an unforgettable experience. The natural beauty of the region was truly breathtaking, and the warm hospitality of the local people made us feel welcome and at home. We left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, and we can't wait to return to this beautiful part of Peru.
